About Concept Japan

Some businesses are built on opportunity. Concept Japan was built on love, in more ways than one.

Katsu and Helen Ikeguchi met as young adults in Adelaide, eventually made a life together in Japan, and returned to Australia carrying something most importers simply cannot manufacture: a deep, lived understanding of Japanese culture and the relationships that come with it.

Their first venture, Ikeguchi Creative Life, opened in Adelaide in December 1998 and became a local institution for sixteen years, bringing Japanese homewares to a city that had never quite seen anything like it. The wholesale arm, Concept Japan, followed in 2001 and eventually grew large enough that the retail store was sold in 2015 to give it the full focus it deserved.

Biannual buying trips to Japan keep the range fresh and seasonally diverse. The relationships Katsu and Helen have built with Japanese suppliers, local artists, and craftspeople over more than two decades of trade are what separate their catalogue from anything you would find on a mass import shelf.

Why We Stock Them

I will be honest: not everything in the Concept Japan catalogue is for us. Some of it sits closer to mass market novelty than considered homeware. But within that catalogue there is a selection of pieces with real character. Bowls, cups, vases, and serving sets that carry the weight of Japanese ceramic tradition without taking themselves too seriously.

These are pieces that earn a place on your dinner table, your shelf, or your mantelpiece because they are genuinely interesting to look at and satisfying to use. That is the bar we apply, and the selection you will find here reflects it.

The Craft

The pieces we have chosen come primarily from the Mino ware tradition, one of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic regions. Each piece balances function with quiet beauty, and several carry the kind of quirk and warmth that makes Japanese design so enduringly appealing to Australian homes.
